Installing the Awaken Skill for Claude or Codex

Step-by-step guide to teach Claude how to use Awaken with a one-line install. The instructions work mostly the same for Codex as well.

Written by Andrew Duca

Step 1: Create your API key

  1. In Awaken, go to Settings → API Keys.

  2. Make sure the right account is selected.

  3. Click Create API Key in the top right.

  4. Give it a name (for example, "Claude") and create it.

  5. Copy the key right away and keep it somewhere safe. For security, Awaken only shows the secret once. If you lose it, just create a new one. Treat it like a password. Anyone with it can see your tax data.

Each key is tied to the one account you created it under, so it can only access that account's data.

Step 2: Install the skill

Open Claude and paste this message into the chat:

install this skill https://api.awaken.tax/skill

Claude will download the skill and save it into its skills folder. That's the whole install.

Heads up: Claude may ask for permission before it downloads anything from api.awaken.tax, just approve it when prompted. In some environments (like claude.ai or sandboxed setups), access to new websites is blocked by default, so you may need to whitelist api.awaken.tax in Claude's "Capabilities" section first.

If the download is blocked and you can't whitelist the domain: go back to Settings → API Keys in Awaken and click Download skill to get a zip file, then give that file to Claude and ask it to install the skill from the zip.

Step 3: Set up your API key

Once the skill is installed, type this into Claude:

setup awaken

Claude will ask for your API key. Paste in the key you created in Step 1. You only need to do this once. After that, Awaken stays linked and you can just start asking questions.

Ways to use it (with examples)

After it's set up, talk to Claude normally. Here are prompts people find useful:

Get a snapshot

  • "What's my current crypto net worth, and how is it split between coins, DeFi, and NFTs?"

  • "Show my top 10 holdings with cost basis and how much they're up or down."

  • "List my connected wallets and exchanges, and tell me if any have sync problems."

Plan around taxes

  • "Give me my 2025 tax summary, capital gains and total income."

  • "What were my biggest losses last year? I'm thinking about tax-loss harvesting."

  • "How much could I potentially save in taxes? Show me the biggest opportunities first."

  • "List all my sales in 2025 that resulted in a gain over $1,000."

Dig into one coin

  • "Show my ETH holdings broken down by wallet and staking, with cost basis."

  • "What would I realize in gains or losses if I sold all my SOL right now?"

Clean up and label (this changes your data)

  • "Find transactions for wallet 0xABC… and label them as fees, show me the plan first before changing anything."

  • "Label these three transactions as 'Gift sent' and add a note explaining why."

  • "This transaction mixes a swap and a fee, split them apart for me."

Good to know

  • Some requests change your data. Labeling and splitting transactions actually edit your account. When in doubt, ask Claude to "show me the plan first" before it makes changes, it can preview without touching anything.

  • One key, one account. A key only sees the account it was made under. If you manage multiple accounts, create a separate key for each.

  • Skill vs. MCP. The skill and our MCP connection both let Claude talk to Awaken you only need one. The skill is the simplest option for Claude; MCP also works with Codex and other tools.

  • Lost your key? You can't view it again after creation. Just Revoke the old one on the API Keys page and create a new one.

  • Turning it off. To disconnect at any time, go back to Settings → API Keys and click Revoke next to the key. You can also ask Claude to delete the skill.
