How to Upload Your Awaken Tax Documents to TurboTax

Filing your crypto taxes is a straightforward process when you use the reports generated by Awaken. Follow this step-by-step guide to move your data into TurboTax Online accurately.

⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: DO NOT DOUBLE-REPORT

Do NOT upload your 1099-DA (or other digital asset forms) to both Awaken and TurboTax. Awaken’s report already includes all transactions from your 1099-DA. If you upload that same form to TurboTax separately, your data will be counted twice. This will result in an inaccurate tax return, potentially leading to significantly more tax owed than you actually owe and red-flagging your filing with the IRS.

Phase 1: Prepare Your Data in Awaken

Before starting, ensure your Awaken account is fully reconciled, and you are satisfied with the numbers.

Step 1: Navigate to the Taxes page in the left-hand menu bar in Awaken.

Step 2: Upload your 1099-DA forms to Awaken in the US Taxes section and reconcile any necessary transactions. You should have one form from each centralized exchange you used in 2025.

Step 3: Download all relevant 8949 forms, including:

  • One or 2 forms per centralized exchange (8949 H&K and 8949 I&L)

  • Your cap gains 8949 for onchain transactions

Step 4: Upload your documents to TurboTax

  • Follow the in-depth guide for adding your 8949s

  • Also enter your crypto income manually, and download your Schedule 1 for your records

Phase 2: Upload to TurboTax

Switch to your TurboTax Online account to begin the import process.

Step 1: Navigate to TurboTax and find the “Wages and Income” section on the left-hand side.

Step 2: Under “Investments and Savings,” choose the section labeled “Stocks, cryptocurrency, mutual funds, bonds, other (1099-B, 1099-DA)”.

Step 3: On the screen asking if you had investment income in 2025, select “Yes”.

Step 4: Click “Enter a different way”.

Step 5: When asked how you want to add your docs, choose “Upload” and hit “Continue”.

If your document fails to upload because it is too large, you may need to use the "Type it in myself" option instead. You can find our guide for that process here.

Step 6: Upload your Awaken.Tax TurboTax report. Reminder: This single file covers your digital asset sales; do not upload additional 1099-DAs.

Phase 3: Review and Clear Flags

TurboTax may flag some items as “Needs Review,” often due to a $0 cost basis or $0 proceeds.

Step 1: TurboTax may show an “Awaken Tax” entry with a “Needs Review” tag. Click on “Review” to edit.

Step 2: Awaken automatically adds your stablecoin transactions to the report, so hit Continue on the “double-check your sales” screen.

Step 3: If you have many trades, TurboTax might show a summary screen. If you see transactions that need review, click the pencil icon on the right-hand side.

Step 4: When reviewing individual trades, filter by the “Status” column to bring up all transactions that need review.

Step 5: To correct a flagged transaction, click on the pencil icon on the right.

Step 6: If the basis for the trade was $0, enter $0 in the “Cost or Other Basis” field and hit Continue. You will also have to choose how you received the investment.

Step 7: On the next screen, choose the checkbox that makes sense for your situation (often “None of these apply”).

Step 8: Confirm your $0 cost basis by choosing “I don't want to make any changes to my cost basis right now” and hit Continue.

Phase 4: Entering Other Income (Staking/Mining)

Report staking, mining, or airdrops manually using your Awaken Income Report.

Step 1: In TurboTax, navigate to “Wages and Income” and scroll down to “Less Common Income”.

Step 2: Choose “Miscellaneous Income” at the bottom of the drop-down.

Step 3: On the miscellaneous income screen, choose “Other reportable income” at the bottom. Note: you can choose “Digital assets not reported anywhere else,” but you cannot enter any descriptions of your income.

Step 4: Select “Yes” when asked if you received any other taxable income.

Step 5: Choose “Add”.

Step 6: Enter a description and the total amount from your report. You can be as general or as specific as you like:

  • General: Use a description like “Awaken Tax income report”.

  • Granular: You can create specific entries for “ETH Staking Rewards,” “Airdrops,” or “Bitcoin Mining Income”.

  • You may enter as many of these specific entries as you would like.
