None of the below is tax advice, for your specific situation we recommend talking to a tax professional if you have specific questions about your situation. Feel free to email team@awaken.tax and we are happy to connect you to great crypto CPAs.
If you have any questions about the content below, feel free to email us and we’ll try our best to help/clarify anything!
Trading
Coin Swap / Exchange: A sale of one token for another. Will realize capital gain/loss on the token you send, and any fees will be added to the cost basis of what you received.
Coin Buy: Transactions where you buy/receive a token, but there is no "sent" token included in the transaction. You will need to edit the cost basis of the received token by finding the "coin sell" transaction and calculating the USD value of the token sold + the fee paid.
Coin Sell: Transactions where you sell/send a token, but there is no "received" token included in the transaction. Will realize capital gain/loss on the token you send.
NFT Swap: Trading one NFT for another. Will realize capital gain/loss on the token you send, and any fees will be added to the cost basis of what you received.
NFT Buy / Mint: Purchasing an NFT with a regular token. Will realize capital gain/loss on the token you send, and any fees will be added to the cost basis of what you received.
NFT Sell / Burn: Selling an NFT for a regular token. Will realize capital gain/loss on the NFT you send, and any fees will be added to the cost basis of what you received.
Staking & LP
Staking Deposit: You deposit money into a staking protocol, and do not have capital gains/loss from the tokens you deposit. Any fees paid go to “Rewards Expenses” to offset staking income you may claim in later transactions.
Staking Swap: A sale of one token for another, usually for a derivative token (ex. ETH → stETH). We realize full capital gain/loss on the token you send as if you are selling it. See “Wrapping Coins” section here https://gordonlaw.com/defi-tax-guide/.
LST Mint: Minting an LST using the native staking asset (SOL <> JitoSOL, ETH <> rETH, etc.). This label does not apply to swaps between these assets, it is intended only for minting natively via the specific LST's smart contract. You can use the toggles on the settings page to treat LST Minting and Redeeming as non-taxable.
Claim Rewards: If you claim rewards from staking. Claimed assets will be treated as income, so if you claim 50 LOOKS and LOOKS is $10 at the time of the transaction, you will realize $500 of income. Any fees paid go to “Rewards Expenses” to offset your income. Rewards count as ordinary income.
Unstaking Withdraw: You withdraw money into a staking protocol, and do not have capital gains/loss from the tokens you withdraw. If you deposited 500 LOOKS and withdrew 1,000 LOOKS, their will be 500 withdrawn from the amount you initially deposited (and we’ll carry the cost-basis for you), and the other 500 will be treated as income at the price of the token at the time of the withdraw. Ex. if LOOKS is $10, you would have your 500 LOOKS of the deposit and the 500 LOOKS you earned, and we’d realize a $5,000 income on those LOOKS. Any fees paid will go into “Rewards Expenses” to offset your rewards income.
Unstaking Swap: A sale of one token for another, usually for a derivative token (ex. stETH → ETH). We realize full capital gain/loss on the token you send as if you are selling it. See “Wrapping Coins” section here https://gordonlaw.com/defi-tax-guide/.
LST Redeem: Redeeming an LST (e.g., returning jitoSOL and receiving SOL) natively via the specific LST's smart contract. This label does not apply to swaps of these assets.
Add Liquidity: A sale of multiple tokens for another, usually for token that represents your liquidity position. Ex. you deposit USDC and ETH and get UNI-V2 (ETH/USDC). We realize full capital gain/loss on the tokens you send as if you are selling it. See “Liquidity Pools” section here https://gordonlaw.com/defi-tax-guide/.
Remove Liquidity: A sale of a liquidity position for the underlying tokens. Ex. swapping UNI-V2 (ETH/USDC) for the ETH + USDC. We realize full capital gain/loss on the tokens you send as if you are selling it. So if ETH + USDC is worth $1,000 each when you withdraw, and your UNI-V2 has a cost-basis of $1,000. We’d realize a $1,000 gain ($1,000 USDC + $1,000 ETH - $1,000 UNI-V2 cost-basis). See “Liquidity Pools” section here https://gordonlaw.com/defi-tax-guide/.
Wrapping: This label applies to both wrapping and unwrapping transactions where you use the wrapping contract directly. You can use the toggles in settings to treat these as non-taxable events.
Loans
Lend Deposit: All assets you are lending are treated as collateral. No gain/loss is realized on them. When you withdraw, we transfer your cost-basis. Fees realize gain/loss for the sale price.
Lend Swap: When you are using a protocol like aave and trading ETH for AAVE ETH. We will realize gain/loss on all sent assets (in this case ETH).
Unlend: The collateral you deposited is returned back and we use your original cost basis. Awaken does not currently compute any interest you paid on the loan. If you did pay interest, we’d recommend calculating it and making a note on the transaction. You can talk to a tax advisor to write this off accordingly, but due to complexities in calculating on-chain interest we do not currently do this.
Unlend Swap: When you are using a protocol like aave and trading AAVE ETH for ETH. We will realize gain/loss on all sent assets (in this case AAVE ETH).
Borrow: We will not realize a gain/loss on any assets you borrow. Ex. you deposited an NFT as collateral and got 1 ETH. In this case you’d receive the ETH at the market price, and we’d store a “Loan Liability” for that amount. No gain/loss nor income is realize on the ETH. If you plan on taking a different approach, please contact a tax advisor before doing anything.
Repay: We will not realize a gain/loss on any assets repaid. Ex. if you returned your 1 ETH to get back your NFT, we’ll transfer your original cost basis of the NFT but not realize any gain/loss nor income on the ETH you deposited back. If you plan on taking a different approach, please contact a tax advisor before doing anything.
Friend & Businesses
Receive: If you received crypto from a wallet (ex. business transfer between your business and personal wallets). These are not taxable, and the same as a “Wallet Transfer.”
Payment: All sent tokens realize gain/loss as if you sold then. Ex. you used BTC to buy pizza, you would be selling the Bitcoin at the market value and realizing capital gain/loss.
Donation: Any donation to a qualified non-profit. These will show up as “Donation Expenses” for the value of the asset when you donated it. Ex. if you donated 1 ETH worth $2,000 at the time of donation, the “Donation Expense” would be $2,000.
Gift: Any gifts to / from friends. These are not taxed. Please consult a tax advisor for this, as what is qualified as a gift varies depending on your situation.
Income
Airdrop: All assets received from an airdrop are taxed as income when you receive them. For example if you are airdropped 500 LOOKS when it is worth $5, you will realize $2,500 of income.
Income: This is for if you are paid in crypto (salary, goods, services, and anything in between that you would typically report as income). For example, you do smart contract development work and receive 1,000 USDC for your services. Taxed as income.
Rewards: All assets are treated as income. This is for things like Royalties, or if you received a reward from a protocol for participating. You can use this instead of “Claim Rewards” if it is not from staking activity.
Mining Income: All received assets are treated as income.
Spam: All assets will be given a 0 dollar cost basis and filtered out of your transaction history. This is helpful if you received an asset that is spam and it is worthless.
Income Expense: An expense that will offset income. Ex. fees paid to claim income, expenses paid as part of a mining operation, etc.
Transfers
Bridging: Sending assets from one chain to another (e.g., ETH on Arbitrum to ETH on Base) If both sides of the bridge transfer are imported to Awaken, they should sync automatically. If they don't, you can edit them by selecting both transfers and clicking 'bridge' in the pop-up modal. See our tutorials for bridging transactions here. If only one side of the bridge has been imported to Awaken, you can use the manual bridge label.
Note: Awaken treats bridging as a taxable disposal by default, but you can toggle this off in the settings tab.
Cross-chain swaps: Similar to bridging, except you dispose of an asset on one chain, and receive a different asset on the destination chain (e.g., you sell ETH on Ethereum and receive SOL on Solana). If both sides have been imported, we should sync them automatically. If not, you can use the Coin Sell label for the sent asset and the Coin Buy label for the received asset.
Wallet transfer: Non-taxable transfers between accounts/wallets you own. Our system should sync your wallet transfers automatically, just like bridging. If they don't, you can edit them by selecting both transfers and clicking 'bridge' in the pop-up modal. See our tutorial for internal transfers here.
Perpetuals / Futures
Note: we have built out automated support for most major perps/futures platform, like HyperLiquid and Jupiter Perps. It is best to let our automated system do the work, and only apply manual labels when absolutely necessary.
Open Position: We will treat any deposits as “Futures Expenses”. For example if you spent 1 ETH worth $1,000 at the time of the transaction, you’d accrue a $1,000 “Futures Expense”. Any fees paid will go under “Futures Fees”, and offset your final futures gain/loss.
Close Position: When you close a position, we realize the amount at the time of the transaction as futures proceeds. For example if you close the position and gain 2,500 USDC, we’d realize a futures proceeds of $2,500. We’ll subtract the “Futures Expenses” and “Futures Fees” from to get your net gain/loss for your futures positions.
Funding Payment: A gain or loss realized on a perpetuals position. This will reduce or increase your Futures Proceeds and show up as a line items in the futures report.
Liquidation: If you had a crypto position liquidated, usually in a margin or perpetuals or futures account. This will realize a gain/loss on the value that was liquidated.
Other
Non-taxable: We will not realize any gain/loss on the tokens sent or received. We will realize gain/loss on the fees you paid (fees are subject to capital gain because you are disposing the underlying asset).
Fee expense deduction: This will offset your capital gains by the value of the asset at the time of the transaction. For example if you sent 1 ETH worth $1,000, this would add a -$1,000 on your final capital gains number. This can be used for investment related expenses.
Note: all fees realize gain/loss at the time of the transaction. Because cryptocurrency is a property under the eyes of the IRS, when you use it as a fee you are effectively “selling it”. Ex. if you use 1 ETH to pay a fee that you bought for $500 and ETH is currently $1,000, you are realizing $500 of gains on that ETH.
